Federal Changes Impacting Grant Programs for Michigan Libraries

Federal budget uncertainties, shifting priorities, and policy changes are causing significant changes and delays in grant programs and funding processes for Michigan libraries and cultural organizations. Updates from the Library of Michigan, Michigan Humanities, and the Michigan Arts and Culture Council highlight adjustments to grant cycles, compliance requirements, and funding priorities. Our mission and commitment drive everything we do and as we close in on the final meetings to update our strategic plan, we are even more committed. Every day we are making sure that you are informed through online and in-person events—through our pillars of advocacy, education, and engagement.

With that said, we want to make sure that you know that MLA’s leadership (on the board, staff, and committees) is closely monitoring the fast-paced discussions that are taking place in our country, and we will continue to strongly and loudly advocate for the essential and critical role that libraries play in our communities throughout Michigan.

Congressman Sander Levin Named 2018 MLA Heart of a Champion

MLA is pleased to announce Congressman Sander Levin is the winner of the MLA 2018 Heart of a Champion Award. The award, established in 2012, recognizes a library supporter who has shown an exceptional commitment to libraries and the library profession through continued advocacy, supporting or providing funding for the local library, or continued support of Michigan Library Association activities.

ALA Advocacy Alert: #FundLibraries in FY25

The U.S. House of Representatives has proposed a 15% cut to federal library funding. Contact your federal legislators using the ALA action center and tell them we need their help to preserve and expand this critical funding and the services it supports.

MLA Wins PACE Award for MI Right to Read Campaign

In 2023, MLA worked with PR firm Martin Waymire on a six-month campaign promoting the MI Right to Read coalition. This May, Martin Waymire and MLA were honored by the Central Michigan chapter of the Public Relations Society of America for the MI Right to Read campaign.
