Public, academic and specialty librarians can learn how to recognize leadership potential in themselves and others. Part two focuses on mentoring; how it works and how it connects with leadership. Anyone looking to broaden their perspective should attend.

Library Leadership

If you look up the term leader in a dictionary, you will find a variety of definitions. “One that leads or guides,” “One who is in charge or command of others” or “One who heads an organization” are all valid, yet different descriptions. In the broadest sense of the word, a "leader" is someone who brings people together and guides them toward a common goal. Anyone can tell others what to do, but effective leadership requires more than the ability to assign tasks to others. This session will cover three key aspects of effective leadership and how to apply them to your own situation: The importance of up, down and lateral communication; using self-evaluation to recognize leadership potential in yourself and creating an organizational culture where calculated risks are expected and risk taking is encouraged.
Jennifer Maxson, Practice Group Leader and Coach, Varnum Consulting

This panel of seasoned library leaders will discuss the characteristics of a leader, identifying leaders in your library or from within yourself, what it means to lead from any position, how to foster an organizational culture of risk taking and how to engage and cultivate future leaders.
