Building Makerspace Culture in Libraries
Makerspaces are more than 3D printers. They offer libraries and librarians new venues through which to build community, develop patron capacity and empower creative expression. In this talk, we'll explore questions to consider in launching a makerspace as well as possible activities and equipment. Most importantly, we'll talk about infusing our library-centered makerspaces with a maker culture that celebrates trial-and-error, process and lifelong learning.

The Paperless Librarian
Between meeting notes, emails, budgets, and everything else that the busy librarian needs to function, the librarian typically needs to store and manage thousands of pieces of paper. Learn how to use a tablet, a scanner, and the cloud to eliminate almost all of it, with the added bonus of making all of it searchable by keywords or tags. Learn how going paperless can make your working life much more efficient, and you get to saves trees at the same time.

Creating Value to Show Value: Efficient use of the "free" Libanalytic Dataset from SpringShare (LibGuides)
Attendees will be shown one way to utilize the free libanalytic dataset (SpringShare-LibGuides) to collect statistics on more than one service aspect of an academic library's reference department. This is accomplished by carefully constructing the data collection form so that it will record statistical data for all services provided by the reference department at Zahnow Library, Saginaw Valley State University. The Presentation will provide a step by step demonstration of creating the dataset, making multiple collection forms for data collection, and discussing how to easily make value driven reports provided by the free software.

The Power of the New MeL Discovery Service: Learn How to Embed a Search Widget on your Library’s Website
The Library of Michigan has been working to implement a new discovery service for the Michigan eLibrary (MeL) that was developed through a partnership between Innovative Interfaces’ Encore and EBSCO’s EDS discovery systems. Come see the newly redesigned Michigan eLibrary and learn how to take the search box and place it on your local website as a widget that will go right to this powerful search on MeL. At this presentation you will learn how the widget works, what it is searching in MeL, how the results are displayed and how to manipulate those results to your advantage. This widget brings the power of MeL to any library website and provides both staff and patrons with one-stop shopping to over four million dollars’ worth of database content plus the entire contents of MeLCat.

Jumprope-ing with the Standards Bearers: Using technology to assess authentic learning and applied mastery
Participants will have the opportunity to evaluate the pedagogical effectiveness of standards-based grading apps such as Jumprope to assess media literacy. We will review data from our two year online journalism initiative and some inferences about digital citizenship and adolescent civic fidelity. We are most interested in the continuing disparity between character and academic growth

Responsive Web Design - A Paradigm Shift
Responsive Web Design (RWD) is the biggest paradigm shift in web design in the last decade. Join us for a brief overview of RWD, where it began, what elements comprise it, the importance of RWD on your website and the practicalities of implementing it. Should you hire a vendor? Handle it in-house? Information on each option will be covered. Details on the Michigan State University Libraries' implementation of responsive web design using the Drupal Omega theme and solutions adopted to transform an existing, fixed width library web site to a responsive design will also be shared.

Using Wikipedia For Community Engagement In Your Library
Wikipedia “Edit-a-thons” are free/public all-ages events  designed to expose library assets to the community. Volunteer Wikipedia editors gather at the library and work with library staff and patrons to improve and expand Wikipedia articles of local interest using library resources. Edit-a-thons are an outreach project used by the Wikipedia community worldwide since their inception in 2009 and transform the library facility into an outward facing community hub. The presenters will share their experience in creating these engaging events, outline planning and evaluation methods, and discuss the beneficial outcomes for the library and the community.
