Book talks are great, but interactive learning makes topics come alive -- especially for young readers. Participants in this session will learn how baking with crickets or mealworms can lead to discussions of history, world culture, sustainability, and alternative food sources; how dissecting an owl pellet can answer questions about ecosystems and food webs; or how watching videos of birds flying can lead to brainstorming about the ways in which biomimicry can (and has) influenced design. This lightning talk will inspire library staff to look for new and creative ways to pair fun, education, hands-on activities to pair with new STEM- and STEAM-related books. In-house and outreach programs will be discussed, all focused on helping young readers understand that nonfiction is anything but boring.

As libraries continue to embrace their role as social impact organizations, how can we rethink our traditionally consumer-focused customer service orientation?  How can we empower staff at all levels to realize their potential in community engagement? Using existing research and theory around mentorship, we will explore key ways to infuse customer service interactions with the "critical ingredients'' of mentoring moments. These moments can stand alone as a single positive interaction for patrons of all ages or act as a catalyst to the development of long-term networks throughout the community.

Learn the ins and outs of managing library volunteers successfully.  Center Line Public Library has witnessed an influx of volunteers over the past several years, especially with the local school district requiring community service hours prior to senior graduation.  This presentation will cover the recruitment and selection of volunteers, hosting a comprehensive volunteer orientation to your library, and retaining volunteers.  It will also provide fresh ideas on tasks for volunteers as well as, most importantly, conveying appreciation towards those that do so much, while unpaid!
