Congressman Sander Levin Named 2018 MLA Heart of a Champion

MLA is pleased to announce Congressman Sander Levin is the winner of the MLA 2018 Heart of a Champion Award. The award, established in 2012, recognizes a library supporter who has shown an exceptional commitment to libraries and the library profession through continued advocacy, supporting or providing funding for the local library, or continued support of Michigan Library Association activities.

MLA Awarded Nonprofit Relief Grant

MLA has been awarded a grant of $25,000 from the Michigan Nonprofit Relief Fund, a collaborative fund of the Michigan Nonprofit Association and the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity.

This award may be used as a general operating grant pursuant to the Department of the Treasury Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Fund (SLFRF) Final Rule effective April 1, 2022.

The award recognizes a librarian who shows leadership early in his or her career, expanding the role of librarian through being forward-thinking and moving libraries into the future. Winners of this award are energetic efficient librarians who push the boundaries of originality and creativity to establish a library culture that sets high expectations, promotes learning, and creates understanding of the library as an integral part of the community.

State of Michigan Budget 2022-2023 Updates

Revenue for the 2022-23 fiscal year decreased slightly more than forecasted, the House Fiscal Agency (HFA) said in its October report.

Public Opinion Polling Update

As the MI Right to Read paid advertising campaign rolls to an end, MLA commissioned a single question in the EPIC-MRA omnibus public opinion poll (600 sample – Error ±4.0%)  in early November. We wanted to see the change in voter perception about support for state legislation to protect the right to read from March 2023 to now.
