ALA Councilor's Report - February 2023

At the 2023 LibLearnX (LLX) conference the ALA Council sessions were divided into a special session and two regular meetings. 

The special session focused on finalizing the language and recommendations of council members in the bylaws draft before it is put to vote by the general membership as the singular governance document. Several amendments and recommended changes were addressed by members of council regarding the language of the bylaws draft document. These included discussion of amendments concerning intent and language for the policies establishing or defining articles of the new bylaws:

Michigan Library Millages August Election Results

Check out our roundup of the August 2, 2022 election results for millage issues on ballots around the state. There were 48 millage questions on the ballots and 43 of these passed. We are proud of the library boards, staff, and supporters for their work on these campaigns and their dedication to supporting their libraries. The Library of Michigan provides a listing of Public Library Millage Election Results from 2010 to the present. Note From Debbie

I said “yes” before I really knew what was expected, but when the esteemed and honorable 49th Governor of the Great State of Michigan calls, you don’t hesitate, you step up and show up.

I was incredibly honored to have been chosen to help Governor Whitmer lay the foundation for her State of the State address. This past Tuesday, I facilitated one of two small roundtable discussions of Michigan residents in Brighton as they shared how they are impacted by the economy, inflation, education and a few other topics. I got to ask questions about the central issues affecting our state, and the participants got to share with the Governor why these issues mattered to them, and to share their hopes for Michigan. They came from different walks of life and different political parties, but the time was spent having an authentic, civil conversation on the fundamentals that are sadly often missing these days.
