MLA Connect Advocacy Hour

Thursday,  May 26, 2022
10:00 - 11:00 AM

MLA Connect Advocacy Hours are an opportunity for the library community to learn more about MLA's advocacy and legislative priorities including funding, elections, property taxes, literacy, internet access, privacy, intellectual freedom, and more. Each month, we will address a new topic and share any pending legislation introduced in the House or Senate that could impact the Michigan library community. Open discussion and Q & A will follow the interview-style agenda.

Monthly sessions will take place generally on the third Thursday of the month at 10:00 am. Advocacy Hours are free to attend to anyone interested in joining the conversation! A maximum of 500 attendees can join each live event. Registered attendees will receive information and a link to access the meetings on the Zoom platform.

Join MLA on Thursday, May 26th at 10:00 AM to learn more about the work of the Intellectual Freedom Task Force. Dillon Geshel, Task Force Chair and MLA Board Member-at-Large, will update attendees on the Mi Right to Read coalition and new resources available to Michigan libraries to support Intellectual Freedom including new funds that are now available to organizational member libraries for financial assistance for legal fees or paying for training sessions on Intellectual Freedom. The Intellectual Freedom Task Force serves as a subgroup and coordinates with the Advocacy and Legislative Committee on establishing progressive priorities relating to library collections, censorship and privacy. The purpose of the task force is to support MLA in safeguarding intellectual freedom and first amendment rights, proactively educate and inform the library field of legislation related to intellectual freedom, develop a position and response by MLA in instances of controversy over censorship, and encourage Michigan libraries to develop policies that will support free speech and the freedom to read. Advocacy Hour conversations are always free to attend!
